(This recipe is also used for Frankin' Chill and is a great rule of thumb for our herbal tea blends.  For Frank, we personally sub a 1/2 cup of the sugar with a 1/2 cup of honey.)

A delicious, refreshing, sweet and tart iced drink made from hibiscus flowers and laced with lime.

We love refreshing drinks at Homefire, and Agua de Jamaica is at the top of the list! Made primarily from hibiscus flowers, the name means "hibiscus water" and is a Mexican agua fresca you might enjoy in the middle of the day.

Hibiscus flowers have a delicious, tart, almost cranberry-like flavor, which combined with sugar and lime creates a wonderful, unique taste experience you'll find yourself reaching for again and again.

It is often prepared quite sweet in Mexico, and we like our drinks sweet, and we like a lot of them, so our recipe is for making a full gallon of traditionally sweet Agua de Jamaica.

 Servings: 16

Ingredients

  • 2 Tablespoons Kittens & Kettles' Agua de Jamaica
  • 6 key limes
  • 1 cup sugar or equivalent amount of alternative sweetener

Instructions

  • Add 2 Tbsp. of Kittens & Kettles' Agua de Jamaica to 2 quarts of water. Tea bags, tea balls, strainer or even loose is fine.
  • Bring water to a boil, and as soon as it's boiling, lower the heat and simmer for 10 minutes.
  • Remove or strain out the fruit and flowers and pour concentrate into a gallon pitcher.
  • Add 1 cup of sugar for sweeter, or ½ cup for more tart Agua de Jamaica. Substitute other sweeteners to taste. Stir until completely dissolved.
  • Slice and add key limes to concentrate.
  • Top off with 2 quarts of cold water and ice.
  • Refrigerate and enjoy!

Notes

To make two quarts, simply halve the amounts of the ingredients. You probably knew that.
